The lineage is named after the prototypical L1MdA2 element at its base. All of the full length members have A-type promoters unless fused to an F-type element by recombination. However, there are A-type promoters present before this lineage, hence this lineage is not synonymous with "A-type subfamily", which is a polyphyletic collection of lineages.
The domesticus A2 lineage shows two kinds of dynamic behaviors. The stem of the lineage is well populated and appears to resist splitting. Then at ca. 300 Kya, there was a dramatic burst of activity. It is unclear if there are any active survivors today.
Two alignments cover the lineage. The first covers the terminal burst and lower regions of the lineage. The 2nd covers the upper part of the lineage.
