As principal investigator of the San Antonio clinical center and a member of the Planning Committee for this project I have been responsible for developing the protocol for assessment of carotid ultrasound for this project. I have worked on the distribution of insulin resistance (by the frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test). We have shown that non-diabetic blacks are more insulin resistant than non-diabetic non-Hispanic whites. This data was generated from the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study. Our data suggests that blacks may have high rates of NIDDM because they are very insulin resistant. I have recently evaluated insulin resistance in black subjects with NIDDM. This new data shows that black diabetic subjects are at least as insulin resistant as non-Hispanic white diabetic subjects, thus helping to refute the notion that there is a sizable proportio ricans with a parental history of diabetes. We have shown that risks for NIDDM operate similarly in both high (e.g. Mexican Americans) and low risk (e.g. non-Hispanic whites. |
