Dear Colleagues,

As many of you know, I wanted to establish in honor of Paul Horowitz, who recently lost his battle with cancer, the Horowitz Award for Outstanding Graduate Student that would be given to the graduate student each year that we think most epitomizes Paul’s balanced dedication to research excellence, commitment to teaching and service to the department and his/her fellow students. In addition, the Biochemistry Department will also host one distinguished seminar a year, chosen and hosted by the students, and it will be named the Horowitz Lectureship. The funds for the latter will be provided by the department, but I would like to initiate an endowment that will ensure the Horowitz Student Award is propagated indefinitely in the department.

Many of you have indicated that you would like to donate money to a fund in Paul’s honor, and we have now established this and are ready to receive donations of any amount towards establishing this endowment. I have received the first two donations to this already, one for Bettie-Sue Masters, and one from Carol Horowitz herself who indicated her approval of this Award and Lectureship as something that would have made Paul very proud. I encourage all of you to consider a donation to this fund. It has been established as a Charity donation, so that it is reportable as tax deductible and you will receive written indication of this.

Checks should be made out to UTHSCSA, and in the Memo line should be noted “Paul Horowitz Student Award Fund”. They can be handed in to Curt Schiebel or any of the folks in the Biochemistry office. I thank you in advance for donating to this cause in Paul’s memory.

Sincerely,

Bruce Nicholson
