Telephone: (210) 617-5197 E-mail: katz@uthscsa.edu Dr. Katz and colleagues have investigated the development of diabetes mellitus and bone loss during aging and particularly membrane signal transduction pathways. They have demonstrated that glucose output from the liver increases with age in rats and that this increase may be related to altered expression of beta adrenergic receptors and functional changes in hepatic G-proteins. Work in their laboratory has also shown that parathyroid hormone (PTH) responsiveness of osteoblasts is regulated by bone-derived growth factors, which modulate the expression of the PTH receptor and other components of the PTH signaling pathways. Studies are currently under way to determine whether the decrease in bone formation that predisposes older persons to osteoporosis is related to age-related alterations in the levels or actions of growth factors acting on the PTH signaling complex. Recent work has focused on identifying whether decreased formation of osteoblasts from bone marrow progenetor cells during aging is related to differential expression of progenitor cell genes involved in differentiation and proliferation. |
