From jeremy at biochem.uthscsa.edu Wed Sep 30 13:32:58 2009 From: jeremy at biochem.uthscsa.edu (Jeremy Mann) Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2009 13:32:58 -0500 (CDT) Subject: [Biochem-users] Email quotas Message-ID: <025405168dd1fff22de43a8182150b1c.squirrel@biochem.uthscsa.edu> To all Biochemistry email users: Soon we will be implementing a quota system on users mail spools on the Biochemistry email server. The limits will be 50MB soft and 100MB hard. Once you reach 70% of your hard limit you will receive an email message like the following: "From: mailquota at biochem.uthscsa.edu Disk usage for user jeremy on filesystem /var/spool/mail/jeremy has reached 70% of the allowed quota. 71.49 MB of disk space is being used, out of a maximum of 100 MB." You will continue to receive an email if you keep your mail spool at 70% or more. Once you reach 100% of your quota, incoming emails will be dropped and returned to the sender. For WebMail users: The next time you login, you will notice a "Quota Usage" bar underneath the departmental logo. Green means you are good (under 50MB), yellow means you have reached and passed your soft limit, and red means you are in jeopardy of reaching your hard limit. You will also see at the very top a message like this once you have reached your quota limits: "WARNING: Your quota usage is currently 109.6%. You may want to make sure you empty out your "INBOX" and move messages to another mail folder." For POP/IMAP users: You will receive a warning email message from "mailquota at biochem.uthscsa.edu" when you reach your soft and hard limits. -- Jeremy Mann jeremy at biochem.uthscsa.edu University of Texas Health Science Center Bioinformatics Core Facility http://www.bioinformatics.uthscsa.edu Phone: (210) 567-2672 From jeremy at biochem.uthscsa.edu Wed Sep 30 14:33:14 2009 From: jeremy at biochem.uthscsa.edu (Jeremy Mann) Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2009 14:33:14 -0500 (CDT) Subject: [Biochem-users] Answers to some of your questions regarding quotas Message-ID: <5c5456632e847abfbac203603066d55b.squirrel@biochem.uthscsa.edu> I am posting answers I have given that further explain the email quota system. Difference between soft and hard limits - The soft limit is considered a warning limit. Mail still works and incoming mail is not affected. The hard limit is a physical limit that once you reach, incoming email, CC'ed email to your account, etc.. will be physically blocked and bounced back to the sender. INBOX versus your other mail folders - The INBOX location is a physical partition with a limited amount of storage space. By moving messages out of the INBOX, your other mail folders can continue to grow as normal. -- Jeremy Mann jeremy at biochem.uthscsa.edu University of Texas Health Science Center Bioinformatics Core Facility http://www.bioinformatics.uthscsa.edu Phone: (210) 567-2672
