Subject: [HSC-Unix] Internet-2 committee participation needed
Dear Members of this list:
As you all probably have heard by now, UTHSCSA and UTSA have been
connected to Internet 2. The funding for this comes from an NSF grant
on which I am the PI, and from the University which committed to a
100% match for 2 years.
Shortly we will go "live" with Internet-2 and have I2 available on every
ethernet jack on campus. If everything goes well, the availability of I2
will have a MAJOR impact on scientific and academic computing on campus
and open some amazing doors for us.
In order to assure that everything will go well, I have been asked by
Bob Ports in T&N to set up an Internet-2 advisory committee, whose
task it will be to educate faculty, students and staff about Internet 2,
promote its use and come up with procedures for I2 implementations on
campus. I also want to use the committee's brainpower to come up with
new and innovative I2 applications on campus, and to help get everyone
as excited about the I2 opportunities as I am.
Another task will be to make sure that by the time the grant runs out
we have established widespread enough use of Internet 2 on campus
to convince the administration to continue funding it.
Here is a partial list of technologies that can be accomplished with
I2: Streaming audio and video, multicast enabled teleconferencing (many
on many, rather than traditional one-on-one), remote instrumentation,
tele-teaching, large databases/data sharing, computer desktop sharing
and virtual network computing, distributed grid computing and remote
visualization. My goal for example would be to bring desktop video
conferencing to each desktop computer.
It is with this letter that I am looking to you for nominations to this
committee. If this sounds like something you yourself or someone you
know would be excited in participating, please send me the nominee's
name and e-mail address, and definitely feel free to nominate yourself.
I would welcome participation by all schools and departments.
Thanks, -Borries
