[HSC-Unix] Reschedule of SANS Course [and Edited Session Announcement]

To all:

Sorry for the confusion, but there was a serious mixup at SANS concerning
the mentor-led class I'm teaching. The notification many of you received
last Thursday was the draft they originally sent me in early August; I
corrected and sent it back to them, and that's the one I sent out earlier
this month. Consequently, they never sent out the edited one and
distributed the original draft the same day I started the class.

Because of the mixup on SANS' part, I'm shifting the class to October 23 and
it will run through the end of January (a lot of holidays fall on Thursdays
this year). Due to the late and incorrect posting from SANS, I was able to
get the group discount for anyone registering from the University.
Originally, you needed 4 people from the same office to get the group
discount, but anyone registering from UTHSCSA can get the $2050 cost,
regardless of the number registering. This equates to a 38% savings over
the regular conference fee and a 21% savings off the regular $2595
mentor-led fee. Call me for details on getting the University discount when
you register.

The last day to sign up for this session and to get the books for free is
October 17. Anyone who has already signed up and paid needs to contact me
so we can work with SANS to get a refund on the amount paid above the new
$2050.

Thanks again, and I apologize for the confusion.

Hello All

SANS Security Essentials Course, our widely acclaimed computer and network
security course, will be offered in the San Antonio area, for a limited
number (15) of students. The course meets on Thursday evenings beginning
October 23, 2003 and running through January 29, 2004.

Maximize your training time and turbo-charge your career in security by
learning both the full SANS Security Essentials curriculum needed to qualify
for the GIAC certification and the CISSP 10 Domains needed to pass the CISSP
exam. The tuition fee is $2,595, a 22% discount off the Conference Course
tuition fee.

This is the same course that sold out in San Diego, Atlanta, San Francisco
and Washington, DC at our recent SANS Conferences where the tuition fee was
$3,320. To register for the SANS Security Essentials Course in San Antonio,
where the tuition fee is $2,595, contact Scott Weil, sweil at sans.org .

For the $2,595 tuition fee, you will receive:
1. Access to SANS Security Essentials Courseware
2. 2-Volume Set of SANS Security Essentials Course Books
3. SANS Security Essentials Toolkit and CD
4. Eleven 2-hour local mentor sessions
5. GIAC Security Essentials Certification attempt

Please note that all students registering for the course by Friday, October
17 will receive the Course books and Toolkit as part of your tuition fee.
If you register after October 17, you may purchase these books at the SANS
on-line store for $500. So obviously, you save $500 by registering by
October 17.

Who Should Attend:
--Security Professionals that want to fill the gaps in their understanding
of technical information security. --System, Security, and Network
Administrators that want to understand the pragmatic applications of the
CISSP 10 Domains. --Managers that want to understand information security
beyond simple terminology and concepts. --Anyone new to information security
with some background in information systems and networking. --Individuals
who have previously taken this course but did not purchase the right to
attempt certification, or were unable to become certified. You may
participate in this course for $750 (see instructions at the bottom of this
email)!

Joe Granja, who took the local mentor-led course in San Diego last fall,
wrote his mentor: "Mel - just letting ya know I got that job I interviewed
for last week. There is no question the SANS course put me over the top and
helped separate me from lots and lots of other MCSE NT candidates out
there."

Chris Bennett, a local mentor led student from Lansing Community College,
told us this: "I have been working on the boss for a SANS class for months
and the $3000 plus travel was just over his limit. With a special price and
no travel, I can make this one."

The mentor led on-line training is an ideal alternative to attending a live
conference, especially as organizations try to manage travel costs. We are
convinced that SANS' local mentor led program is the best on-line delivery
system available for training system and network administrators in network
security! Plus, this SANS program offers a 22% discount compared to our
SANS conference course fees.

With online training, technically difficult sections can be digested at a
rate less challenging than the "drink from a fire hose" rate that defines
SANS conferences. One challenge that any online program faces is that the
student is on his or her own, while SANS conferences offer the ability to
network with other students. The questions students ask in a class are
vitally important to a lively, worthwhile training course.

Christoph Guenther, Boca Raton Mentor-Led Student writes:
"This course was very helpful. I would have had a very hard time attending
it in a format other than through the Local Mentor Program and I know at
least some of my course companions feel the same way. I strongly recommend
this format."

The Local Mentor Program offers the combined benefits of networking with
other students and an opportunity to ask questions in an interactive
environment along with the benefits of the online training model.

Robert Krempasky, Atlanta Mentor-Led Student, said:
"I enjoyed the experience and meeting the other participants. Learned a lot
from being with them and having the opportunity to sit and discuss material
from different perspectives."

The SANS Security Essentials Local Mentor-Led Course runs for eleven (11)
weeks and is divided into seven sections.

* Introduction to SANS and GIAC Certification Procedures
* Part 1: Networking Concepts
* Part 2: Network Security Overview
* Part 3: Network Security Technologies
* Part 4: Secure Communications
* Part 5: Windows Security
* Part 6: UNIX Security

For a complete course outline, please go to:
http://www.sans.org/local/track1.php

People ask us, "is this an on-line course, or a live course led by a local
person?" The answer is "Yes! It is both".

* You will do the work ONLINE; it is a Web-based curriculum. You work at
your own pace from your home or office.

* In addition, the course will be MENTOR-LED: You will meet for 2 hours
once a week for 11 weeks with other students and with an experienced
security professional for discussion and help with your progress.

* Please note that because you have access to the on-line courseware, you
are not required to attend every class meeting. We know that work or family
priorities may force you to miss a meeting or two. That is fine, as you
have access to all the material online, in audio and .pdf formats.

"The (Local Mentor) was willing to go beyond a simple Q/A session and
provide us with knowledgeable speakers in the field of computer security and
help us attend area computer security organizational meetings." --Peter
Schwenk, Philadelphia Mentor-Led Student

* The first meeting will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2003 from 7:00 -
9:00 PM at: University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio 7703
Floyd Curl Drive Room 309L San Antonio, TX 78229

Subsequent class meetings will be held at the same location and time on
Thursdays: October 30, November 6, November 13, December 4, December 11,
December 18, January 8, January 15, January 22, January 29

Your mentor will be MIKE RUNNELS.
Mr. Runnels is an experienced computer security professional who has GIAC
certification in Security Essentials and is a CISSP. He is currently one of
the Information Security Officers for the University of Texas Health Science
Center and is active with several InfoSec-related organization in San
Antonio and throughout Texas. This is the second Security Essentials course
Mike has led for SANS this year in San Antonio. Contact Mike at
SANSMentor at ev1.net for directions to the class.

* LIMITED TIME DISCOUNT: This outstanding career-enhancing course
ordinarily costs $3,320, but if you sign up and pay your tuition by October
17, your tuition fee will be $2,595. This includes testing for your GSEC
certification, the course books, and the book and CD "GSEC Toolkit". If you
register after this date, the tuition fee will still be $2,595, but you will
need to purchase the course books yourself at our on-line store for $500.

If you know others who would benefit from this training, would you please
forward this note to them? We have found that students who attend the
course in small groups seem to benefit even more than people registering
individually, and to that end, we have a special tuition fee offer of four
students for the price of $8,200! This works out to a tuition fee of $2,050
per student. To take advantage of this offer you do need to all work at the
same organization. Simply follow the registration instructions I will
provide to you.

Have you already taken Track 1, SANS Security Essentials, but did not sign
up for, or did not complete your GSEC certification, and now see the value
in having the credentials and proof of mastery that comes from GIAC Security
Essentials certification?

We have a mechanism to help that we want to experiment with for a limited
time, so please take us up on this offer now if you are interested.

You can register for the SANS Local Mentor Led Security Essentials course
and fully participate for only $750. This offer is available only to alumni
of SANS Track 1 who have taken the course after January 1, 2001. You will
work with our mentor, Mike Runnels, who will assist in preparing you for
your certification. For registration instructions, please contact me at
sweil at sans.org .
