From demeler at biochem.uthscsa.edu Wed Oct 12 23:08:52 2005 From: demeler at biochem.uthscsa.edu (Borries Demeler) Date: Wed Oct 12 22:09:08 2005 Subject: [Ut-grid] Welcome to UT-grid (today's meeting) Message-ID: <200510130308.j9D38qws022714@biochem.uthscsa.edu> Dear Colleagues, First, let me thank you all for contributing to our very productive meeting today, and also thank Jay Boisseau and his colleagues, as well as Jim Williams for taking the time to visit us. I also want to apologize for not scheduling enough breaks :-) It was obvious that more time was needed to continue discussions. It is my hope that we can do this with this mailing list (UT-grid). I want to use it as a forum for all UTHSCSA/UTSA scientists interested in grid computing to stay in touch with the group at TACC and share information, ask questions, and continue this discussion. I personally learned a lot today and was happy to see we are not alone with our interest in HPC. If I subscribed you in error to this list, please send me an email and I will remove your name. You can also manage your own subscription by visiting: http://biochem.uthscsa.edu/mailman/listinfo/ut-grid (this info should also be listed in the header and footer) The messages sent to this list are archived for easy reference. A link to the archives in on the main page. You can also visit the subscriber list (after login) and check to see if I left someone out that should be included in this list (Randy: I don't have the emails for all you colleagues, and Dan, I didn't catch it for your student). The list is currently unmoderated (to members), but if spam turns out to be a problem I may change this setting. A note on posting: Replying to a message from the list will go to every subscriber. If you only want to reply to the poster, please explicitely specify the destination address. Thanks again for making today's meeting a success! Let's keep the dialogue alive. -Borries --- Borries Demeler, Ph.D. Assistant Professor The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dept. of Biochemistry, MC 7760 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78229-3901 Voice: 210-567-6592, Fax: 210-567-1136, Email: demeler@biochem.uthscsa.edu From boisseau at tacc.utexas.edu Tue Oct 18 13:43:44 2005 From: boisseau at tacc.utexas.edu (John R. I believe I had three major action items from the trip: - send out an overview presentation on TACC - schedule a return trip to give the presentation, describe some TACC Technology projects in more details, and offer a Q&A session for UTHSCA and UTSA researchers interested in using TACC resources - send out instructions on how UTHSCA & UTSA folks can request time on TACC Systems using the TeraGrid - send out TACC's policy on purchasing and hosting systems, and providing services, for researchers wishing to leverage our price deals and infrastructure Is that right? She is out of the office this week, but will contact me next week. Perhaps you can send her an e-mail and she will contact you. Regarding Jay's message: > I believe I had three major action items from the trip: > > - send out an overview presentation on TACC Can you post a link to it on this list? > - schedule a return trip to give the presentation, describe some TACC > Technology projects in more details, and offer a Q&A session for > UTHSCA and UTSA researchers interested in using TACC resources I think that would be very useful. In order for this to be most effective, I would suggest that we (UTSA and UTHSCSA) will be prepared for such a visit with a list of questions and concrete project ideas for HPC implementation. I am willing to help coordinate this return visit. > - send out instructions on how UTHSCA & UTSA folks can request time on > TACC Systems using the TeraGrid > - send out TACC's policy on purchasing and hosting systems, and > providing services, for researchers wishing to leverage our price deals and > infrastructure > Is that right? Jay, I would also like to discuss further the possibility of getting an expert like Stuart Johnson visiting for a period of time at UTHSCSA and UTSA to facilitate startup of these initiatives. Again, I think this would be most effective once a little more progress has been made on this end in terms of identifying interest, potential projects and research groups. I know that we would be very much interested in pursuing this for my group - in about 2-3 months we should be ready for such help. -Borries --- Borries Demeler, Ph.D. Assistant Professor The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dept. of Biochemistry, MC 7760 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78229-3901 Voice: 210-567-6592, Fax: 210-567-1136, Email: demeler@biochem.uthscsa.edu From demeler at biochem.uthscsa.edu Mon Nov 7 08:54:00 2005 From: demeler at biochem.uthscsa.edu (Borries Demeler) Date: Mon Nov 7 08:54:11 2005 Subject: [Ut-grid] FW: [LEARN-BOARD:493] Grid Application Workshop: Dec 6-8 at UT Austin TACC (fwd) Message-ID: <200511071454.jA7Es0Ab029506@biochem.uthscsa.edu> FYI... > Sent: Monday, November 07, 2005 8:23 AM > To: learn-board@lists.cc.utexas.edu; learn-tech@lists.cc.utexas.edu > Subject: [LEARN-BOARD:493] Grid Application Workshop: Dec 6-8 at UT > Austin TACC > > [This is a bit off-topic for LEARN, but I think many of you will be > interested.] > > Colleagues, > > SURA, the Southeastern Universities Research Association, is sponsoring > a workshop on Grid Computing at the Texas Advanced Computing Center > (TACC) on the UT Austin Pickle Research Campus, Dec 6-8.
