Phage Therapy.
-
Historically, lytic bacteriophages were used to treat human
infections prior to the development of antibiotics.
-
There is antecdotal evidence of success, although no modern
clinical trials.
-
Due to the antibiotic-resistance problem there is renewed
interest in investigating this technology, both for
use in human medicine and for use in agriculture and animal husbandry.
-
An unanswered question is how difficult it would be to retarget
an effective bacteriophage against one species of bacteria to a different
bacterial species.
